Check the camera's drive mode settings. Press the Drive mode button (located near the top-right side of the camera) and rotate the main dial to select the high-speed continuous shooting mode. Make sure it is not set to single shot or any other mode that disables burst shooting.

Solution. Remove the eyecup. While grasping sides of the eyecup, slide it upward to remove it. Turn the dioptric adjustment knob. Turn the knob the right or left until the focusing point or the center spot metering circle looks sharp in the viewfinder. The diagram shows the knob set at the standard diopter (-1 dpt)

For some reason Canon elect to cover -3 to +1 diopter adjustment on the built in adjustment. I think I also just discovered that Canon builds in a -1 diopter adjustment - to all new EOS bodies. So The effective in camera adjustment is really -4 to 0. ! Very odd, as everyone I have ever met , over time seems to need more positive adjustment!

Comparing the D800 and 5D MK III, it seems to me that the diopter 'jumps' in larger, far more discrete intervals on the D800, relative to the Canon. With the Canon, I find I'm able to tweak the VF perfectly to my liking; on the D800, my preferred diopter adjustment strikes me as approximately right, at best.
